September 4, 2024 - West Virginia state Senator Jack David Woodrum told attendees at the West Virginia Press Association convention last month that he may introduce a bill that would reduce fees for papers in the state that fail to publish notices on their own website and on WVPA’s statewide public notice site, according to a report on WVPA’s member website.

Can the homepage be resurrected as a news seeker’s destination? Should news organizations devote more resources to an outlet’s landing page? Or has the homepage outlived its usefulness, with news outlets better off pursuing more effective ways of attracting readers?

Earlier this month the federal government alleged that Google is a monopolist, reaping illegal monopoly profits, which strikes me as likely correct, even if not helpful to journalism. Even more recently, Google, undeterred, took the news industry to the cleaners in a battle in the California legislature in Sacramento.
