When tragedy hits home, local newspapers step up

Posted

The flooding in the Texas Hill Country has devastated communities and taken lives. In Kerrville — one of the hardest-hit areas — the local newspaper is doing what it does best: providing critical coverage, timely updates and stories that reflect the strength of its people.

This story hits close to home for America’s Newspapers. Our current board president, Leonard Woolsey, is president and publisher of Southern Newspapers and the Galveston County Daily News. One of Southern’s properties, The Kerrville Daily Times, is on the ground — covering this tragedy not as outsiders, but as part of the community.

Led by publisher John Wells, a graduate of the America’s Newspapers Executive Development Program, The Kerrville Daily Times is reporting with clarity, care and deep local knowledge.  The newspaper's team is capturing the voices of first responders, families and volunteers — people they know personally — while providing essential information in a time of crisis. It’s a powerful reminder of the role only a local newspaper can play when a community is at its most vulnerable.
