Journalists at the Austin (Texas) American-Statesman and its six community newspapers are taking steps to unionize at the 150-year-old institution.
A news release issued by the Austin NewsGuild, a unit of the NewsGuild CWA, announced that a majority of the papers' reporters, photographers, columnists and other employees have joined in asking Gannett, the papers’ parent company, to voluntarily recognize the Austin NewsGuild.
If Gannett does not grant voluntary recognition, there will be an election, according to the release.
