As newsrooms ban reporters from betting on the news, tougher questions remain about how to cover the markets themselves

Prediction markets are gambling sites that allow users to bet on the likelihood of a future event — everything from the outcome of an election to the second coming of Jesus Christ. They’re not new. Two popular sites, Polymarket and Kalshi, are six and eight years old, respectively.

But these markets have recently exploded in popularity and influence in the U.S., introducing a new set of ethical quandaries for newsrooms about how, or if, journalists should be using them.
