Our Senior Leadership Conference in Washington brought together two conversations that belong together: how we strengthen our newspaper businesses and how we explain the realities of those businesses to policymakers. Both benefit from the same approach: sharing experience, asking difficult questions and working toward practical solutions.
America’s Newspapers and the News/Media Alliance represent different parts of the industry, but our members have far more in common than our differences in size, ownership or geography suggest. We believe journalism matters, and we have a shared interest in making the businesses that produce it sustainable. That is what “stronger together” means to me.
The Support Journalism Fly-In gave that cooperation a practical purpose. Publishers from America’s Newspapers and the News/Media Alliance came together to meet with members of Congress and their staffs to discuss industry issues and explain what those issues mean for their companies and communities. Those conversations put faces and local experiences behind the discussion, while building relationships that should continue throughout the year.
Inside the conference, the sessions addressed the most critical topics facing newspaper leaders. Roundtables, demonstrations and peer exchanges gave members opportunities to compare approaches, question assumptions and consider what could work in their own businesses. Sessions on digital marketing, employee burnout and the business outlook addressed related questions about reaching customers, retaining good people and making informed choices about where to invest limited resources.
Our Solutions Partners are helping lead that work, developing technologies and services that bridge the gap between what newspapers need to accomplish and the resources available to do it. Their support helps make SLC possible, and their active participation strengthens the discussions. Bringing publishers and partners together around real business needs helps connect new capabilities with practical applications in revenue, advertising, audience and operations.
The next step is for our members to carry those conversations back home and put them into action. Identify an idea worth testing, involve the people who would put it to work and reconnect with a colleague or partner who can help. Sharing what we learn — including what does not work — makes the next decision better informed.
I appreciate the News/Media Alliance’s partnership, our members, our speakers and the Solutions Partners who contributed their time and expertise. The challenges facing newspapers are significant, but none of us benefits from facing them alone. We are stronger when we share ideas, stronger when we speak with one voice, and stronger when we help one another turn those ideas into action. The work ahead is ours to do — and we will do it better together.
