Responding to CIPA legal threats: What publishers need to know

A growing number of news publishers are receiving legal demand letters or facing lawsuits tied to the California Invasion of Privacy Act (CIPA), a decades-old wiretapping law that plaintiffs are now using to challenge common website tools such as analytics trackers, chat features and advertising pixels. These claims can carry statutory damages of up to $5,000 per alleged violation, making them an increasingly significant risk for organizations operating websites accessible to California users — which is most any website in the U.S.

In an upcoming New York Press Association webinar, Dean Ridings, president and CEO of America’s Newspapers, will join Alec Crecelius, NYPA media and marketing coordinator, to discuss how publishers should respond if they receive a demand letter or are served with legal action tied to CIPA.

Ridings will outline practical steps publishers can take immediately — from understanding what these claims typically involve to coordinating with counsel and industry resources — to help news organizations navigate this rapidly evolving legal challenge.
