Report for America’s application will open Sept. 15 for news organizations interested in partnering to host emerging and experienced journalists in their newsrooms for up to three years, beginning July of 2026.

Report for America is a national service program that places talented journalists — corps members — into local newsrooms to report on under-covered issues and communities.

Since our launch in 2017, Report for America has:

  • Placed more than 700 reporters into over 400 newsrooms in all 50 states to help report on under-covered topics and communities.
  • Invested more than $30 million in direct salary support to newsrooms through our innovative cost-sharing service model — and millions more in training and support for newsrooms and journalists.
  • We matched this investment with an additional $30 million in local donations we helped newsrooms raise.
  • Report for America has become one of the nation’s most diverse pipelines of journalists, with nearly half of our corps members identifying as journalists of color; and two-thirds as women.

If selected to the program, newsrooms will:

  • Gain access to a great local reporter recruited by the recruitment team at RFA who is passionate about the beat the newsroom designated a need for coverage.
  • Receive financial support to help expand news coverage by paying half of the salary of the reporter for the first year and 33% of the salary the second year.
  • Connect with our Local News Sustainability Team to help newsrooms raise money to support sustainability efforts.

The application deadline is Oct. 20.  More information about how the program works can be found here.
