Tucked in the thousands of pages of the Ohio Senate’s budget proposal is a provision that would repeal the sales and use tax exemption for newspapers, ending a practice that has been in place as long as the sales tax: 90 years.
The move would be bad for Ohio, one critic says — hitting small businesses in the wallet on the cost of ads and making it harder for citizens to keep informed.
“I can say confidently that these tax increases could harm Ohio businesses by increasing their advertising costs,” Monica Nieporte, president and executive director of the Ohio News Media Association, said in recent testimony to the Ohio Senate Finance Committee.
