This September marks 25 years since Legacy's September 11 memorial first went live — launched within days of the attacks at the request of publisher partners across the country who needed somewhere their communities could grieve together online. It has since grown into one of the largest living tribute collections of its kind: more than 250,000 tributes honoring the 2,977 lives lost that day.
To mark the anniversary, Legacy has given the memorial a full redesign — and added something new: the ability to search tributes by state and city.
“A national monument — not built from stone, but from a quarter million voices,” said Pete Matarangas, COO of Legacy.
The new geographic filter makes the memorial more personal for readers. Instead of browsing 250,000 tributes at once, they can now find the ones closest to home — a neighbor, a name tied to a familiar street, a story from someone in their own community who was touched by that day. It's a way to help readers see themselves, and their town, in a piece of national history.

It's one more example of how Legacy and iPublish continue building tools that bring national moments closer to home for partners and their communities.
