Deadline approaching: Put a Report for America journalist in your newsroom

Posted

Local newspapers looking to fill a reporting gap have an opportunity to add a journalist — with help covering the cost. Report for America, an America’s Newspapers Solutions Partner, is accepting newsroom applications through Oct. 19 for journalists starting in July 2027.

Find out how the program could work for your newsroom at an information session on Oct. 8 or Oct. 15. Learn more and register at https://www.reportforamerica.org/news-rooms/.

The program contributes a portion of the reporter’s salary for a two-year commitment, with an option to renew for a third year. RFA also recruits and vets candidates from a national pool and provides ongoing training for the journalist and the editors supporting them. For newspapers with coverage needs that exceed their staffing budgets, that could mean a dedicated reporter covering schools, local government, health, housing or rural communities.

The support goes beyond hiring. The Report for America sustainability team will assist host newsrooms in finding ways to raise local funding for part of the reporter’s salary, and RFA’s sustainability team works alongside them on that effort.

Applicants should identify a clear need for the proposed beat and demonstrate the editing and mentoring they can provide, a commitment to inclusion and a willingness to pursue local fundraising.
