Carmage Walls Commentary Awards are announced at Senior Leadership Conference

America’s Newspapers recognized excellence in editorial writing and column writing at its Senior Leadership Conference during Tuesday’s Awards Luncheon. The Carmage Walls Commentary Awards honoring the memory of her father were presented by Lissa Walls Cribb, CEO of Southern Newspapers.

First-place winners  are:

  • Editorials (over 35,000 circulation)Victor Joecks, a columnist with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, for editorials calling out local officials for violating the property rights of a local developer.
  • Editorials (under 35,000 circulation) — Dave Coffey, editorial page editor of The Berkshire Eagle, for editorials about ICE raids in the Berkshires.
  • Columns (over 35,000 circulation) — Faimon A. Roberts III, a columnist with The Times-Picayune and The Advocate, for columns that explore the breath and depth of issues facing Louisianans. His columns focused on issues the state has with drinking water systems, a sex scandal and victim-blaming in a small city in Central Louisiana, and a mysterious grave marker in a rural cemetery.  
  • Columns (under 35,000 circulation) — Blake Fontenay, a columnist with TCPalm | Treasure Coast Newspapers, for columns that showed bravery and tenacity as he wrote about the questionable appointment of a Florida sheriff.
