Ahead of the grim 10-year anniversary of Austin Tice’s abduction while reporting in Syria, The Washington Post Press Freedom Partnership urgently calls for his safe return with an “Ask About Austin” sitewide message on Sunday, Aug. 14. The first-of-its-kind, this hour-long devotion of all digital ad units across Post platforms is part of a multimedia #BringAustinHome campaign to keep Tice’s case top-of-mind until he’s freed.
"Multiple U.S. administrations have attempted to negotiate for Austin’s return without success — a result that’s wholly unacceptable and has strengthened our resolve to keep his case top of mind until he is free,” said Fred Ryan, publisher and CEO of The Washington Post. “While we are heartened by the Biden administration’s stated commitment to resolve Austin’s case, we cannot and will not sit idly as the Tice family approaches the unimaginable milestone of missing their son for a quarter of his life. It is our country’s essential obligation to bring Austin home now.”
Through a mix of digital, audio and print advertising and other bold, visual activations, the #BringAustinHome campaign aims to remind audiences of the journalism Tice set out to do, and the high price Tice is paying for doing this critically important work. The campaign kicks off Sunday, July 10, and will include the following:
This initiative is a collaboration among The Post’s Press Freedom Partnership partners: Committee to Protect Journalists, International Press Institute, International Women’s Media Foundation, James W. Foley Legacy Foundation, National Press Club, One Free Press Coalition, Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, Reporters Without Borders and the World Association of News Publishers.
