Atex and Alma News Media partner to accelerate digital subscription growth

Posted

In a bold move toward the future of journalism, Alma News Media — Finland’s top digital news media company — has teamed up with global software leader Atex to fuel its next phase of digital transformation. This strategic partnership marks a pivotal step in Alma’s evolution, helping the media house balance a strong print presence while accelerating growth in the digital subscription space.

From early digital roots to future-ready strategy

While Alma has been in the digital subscription game since 1996, this new collaboration aims to supercharge its momentum. At the heart of the initiative is Kayak, Atex’s flagship content and subscription platform. By adopting an agile, product-based development approach, Alma can roll out new features faster and more efficiently — ensuring a better experience for its readers and more value across the board for Atex customers.

Powering Alma’s digital experience with Kayak

As part of the rollout, Alma is implementing a suite of Kayak modules that touch every corner of the digital subscription lifecycle:

  • Kayak eSuite Self Services: Gives subscribers the power to manage their own subscriptions with ease.
  • Kayak eSuite Sales Portal: Boosts sales capacity while allowing Alma to continue using its own custom campaign tools via the Kayak API.
  • Single Sign-On Integration: Smooth and secure logins through Alma’s own SSO system.
  • Streamlined Payments: Integrated with Paytrail and Kayak Payment API for a seamless transaction experience.
  • Advanced Integration Tools: Using AWS SNS and webhooks to ensure smooth communication between platforms and email systems.

Together, these components build the foundation for MyType Vault — a paywall solution designed for scale and flexibility.

Already live — and growing fast

Alma’s major publications, including Iltalehti and Kauppalehti, are already running on the Kayak platform. And this is just the beginning. New features and improvements are set to launch later this year, showcasing just how adaptable and powerful the Kayak ecosystem can be.

A glimpse into 2025

Looking ahead, Alma plans to fully transition from its in-house subscription system to Kayak’s robust infrastructure. A major focus will be on enhancing Kayak’s campaign management features, ensuring they’re tightly aligned with the demands of digital subscriptions and modern media products.

A win-win collaboration

This partnership isn’t just big news for Alma — it’s a key milestone for Atex, too.

“This is an important milestone for us,” says Jorma Ainassaari, VP of sales and operations at Atex. “Working with Alma brings new energy and fresh perspectives into our product development. We’re excited for what’s ahead.”

Johanna Suhonen, VP of content business at Alma News Media, adds: “Kayak’s capabilities have already impressed us. We’re excited to expand our collaboration and grow our business together.”
