America’s Newspapers encourages its members to contact their legislators and to ask for an exemption to tariffs on newsprint.
There is a significant likelihood that tariffs will be imposed on imports from Canada and Mexico. While there has been a temporary halt placed on the tariffs, it appears that they will be imposed on April 2. As it stands now, newsprint, including magazine paper, will be impacted. Additionally, on March 11, President Trump ordered a doubling of tariffs for Canadian steel and aluminum to 50%.
We have already heard from members that in addition to the tariffs, U.S. manufacturers have announced price increases. It would be beneficial for us to have a unified grassroots effort to stop the tariffs from being implemented on newspapers and magazines, regardless of their audience size. America’s Newspapers is coordinating its efforts with the News/Media Alliance.
We urge you to contact your U.S. senators and U.S. representatives immediately and tell them how your organization will be harmed by these tariffs. The News/Media Alliance has prepared a one-pager for your use. We are not recommending editorials at this time, although we’re watching this closely and may change course in the future.
If you receive any response in support, or in opposition from your legislator, please send an email to Dean Ridings: dridings@newspapers.org.
