The Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation recently announced the addition of Matthew Sauer as its new collaboration and impact officer. Sauer spent 28 years at the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, eventually overseeing 20 newsrooms and 400 journalists in Florida as regional editor for the newspaper’s parent company, Gannett.

Adams Publishing Group has named Randy Rickman regional president for APG Media of Southern Minnesota. Rickman previously served as APG’s regional president for northern Wisconsin and publisher of the (Eau Claire) Leader-Telegram.

A new leadership team has been appointed for The State Journal in Frankfort, Kentucky. Steve Stewart, who is stepping down as publisher, announced the promotions of Chanda Veno, Meri Latek, Sheri Bunker and Austin Horn, who collectively will lead day-to-day operations.

Scott C. Schurz, died Monday, May 24, in Belleair, Florida, surrounded by family and following a recent stroke. He was 85 years old. Schurz was chairman emeritus of Schurz Communications, Inc.

After nearly 42 years in the newspaper business, Rich Paulsen, publisher of the Creston News Advertiser in Iowa, is retiring, effective May 28. He will be succeeded by Craig Mittag.

Marcia Pledger, a former financial journalist and columnist for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, has been named The Florida Times-Union's new opinion and engagement editor. She is the first woman and the first Black journalist in the position last served by Mike Clark, who retired in 2020.

Current NNE president and CEO Aaron Julien will move into the role of chairman. He replaces longtime NNE chairman John Kuhns, who is retiring. Chuck Goodrich will assume Julien’s role. Meanwhile, Dan McClory is being promoted from chief financial officer to chief operating officer of NNE. McClory will maintain his role as publisher of the Valley News.
