On big tech and news publishers, Canada must follow Australia’s lead

Last month, Google announced deals that will see it pay eight Canadian publishers — including The Globe and Mail, the Winnipeg Free Press and Village Media — to license their content on a product called Google News Showcase, launching this fall. The companies didn’t disclose the terms. It came on the heels of Facebook signing agreements with 14 of Canada’s upstart digital publishers for what it called its News Innovation Test, to include selected links on their pages that bring users to news sites. The Atlantic thrived through Trump and the pandemic. The future is harder.

Nicholas Thompson, the chief executive of The Atlantic, gave a presentation to employees last month in which he disclosed some uncomfortable truths about the state of the magazine.  Subscription growth, which had skyrocketed in 2020 thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic and the presidential election, had come back down to earth. For the first time, the number of subscribers had plateaued and started to slightly decline.  more

Google fined $592 million in dispute with French publishers

France’s competition regulator fined Google 500 million euros ($592 million) on Tuesday for failing to negotiate in good faith with French publishers in a dispute over payments for their news. The agency threatened fines of another 900,000 euros (around $1 million) per day if Google doesn’t come up with proposals within two months on how it will compensate publishers and news agencies for their content. more

Louisiana's Daily Iberian donates generator to St. Peter's Church

The Daily Iberian in Louisiana recently donated its 100-kilowatt Generac generator to a local church.  The generator previously was used to power the paper's press during storms — before the newspaper stopped printing the paper locally, and no longer had a need for the generator. more
