America’s Newspapers is now accepting applications for a new State Policy Director, a full-time leadership role that will help drive the organization’s legislative and advocacy priorities at both the state and national levels.
The position is part of the organization’s expanded commitment to protecting and promoting local newspapers — particularly through the newly launched State Advocacy Coalition (ANSAC), which unites press associations and advocacy groups across the country around a shared legislative agenda.
“This position is essential to the next chapter of our advocacy work,” said Dean Ridings, CEO of America’s Newspapers. “We’re looking for someone who not only understands the policy landscape, but who can drive the process forward — coordinating efforts, building coalitions and helping ensure that local newspapers are represented and protected in every legislative conversation.”
Leonard Woolsey, president of the board of directors for America’s Newspapers, underscored the strategic importance of the position: “This isn’t just another role — it’s a key position that will help steer where this industry goes next. We need someone who can turn advocacy into action and help ensure local newspapers have a strong, coordinated presence in every policy conversation that affects their future.” Woolsey also is president of Southern Newspapers, Inc., and president and publisher of The Daily News in
Galveston, Texas.
The State Policy Director will lead advocacy communications, monitor legislative activity, share policy updates with members and provide strategic support for state press associations. The role also includes organizing best practices, supporting fly-in events and local campaigns, and serving as a central hub for legislative guidance within the coalition.
All employees of America’s Newspapers work remotely, and some travel is required to attend the organization’s two annual conferences and support in-person advocacy efforts in Washington, D.C.
