Times Union Editor Rex Smith is stepping down from his position in Albany, New York, effective Feb. 1, capping an 18-year tenure as the newsroom's chief, the paper's publisher and CEO George R. Hearst III announced Tuesday afternoon.

Casey Seiler, who most recently served as the Times Union's managing editor, was named Smith's successor.

Smith will assume the title of editor at large and will continue to oversee the newspaper's opinion pages and write his weekly column, said Hearst, who described Smith as "an editor's editor" during a newsroom staff meeting. He will also oversee a national fellowship program for the Hearst Newspapers.
